fresh off of a pair of well-received eps on his recently-launched manhigh imprint, berlins highly respected techno auteur henning baer makes his first appearance on nonplus with 4 excellently crafted, saturated machine techno tracks on the idea of instinct. following on feelings suggested in the title, the ep opens with a pair of more contemplative pieces: the title track’s spare arrangement puts mechanical rhythmic drive behind its exploration of dusky electronic atmospheres, while the feeling of dna is both brighter and slightly pacier, its hypnosis deriving from the pads and synthesizer sequences that circle the drums. ccc ii takes a darker approach to a similar idea, this time with the suggestion of polyrhythms in the distant and heavily-treated percussive elements circling in the background behind uneasy ambience. it builds to the closer spiritual quest, where overlaid rhythms in 3 and 4 are not easily reducible and create the tension at the track’s centre driving it to its conclusion.

over the last decade, bantam lions (aka liverpool producer mike carney) has devoted much of his spare time to “playful experimentation,” channeling 30 years of musical inspirations and adventures to create electronic music that sits somewhere between hazy nostalgia and far-sighted futurism. now, he’s gathered together some of his favourite moments to create short stories, a debut album – and scenery’s first long-form release – simply overflowing with page-turning musical narratives.
these are short stories to savour, to get lost in, and to revisit time and time again. they’re bantam lions’ stories, but he’s happily shared them for others to enjoy.

he might be an architect by profession, but in his spare time spanish producer jaime tellado sets forth his work with the construction of groove and the design of soundscapes. under his skygaze moniker, he’s built a name for himself far outside the scene he’s grown up in. with his ‘some fun’ ep, once again showcases his well-structured yet wild-flowing melodic groove, combining deep bass with an ambient touch.

zarenzeit is a band project by the label owners with lead keyboarder and producer george btp, also known as allstarr motomusic or dan piu. after several live projects back in the 90ies, the band releases its first full album as black inside with vocalist debra jones davis and sarignia bonfà. the lp infuses deep soulful house and 80ies funk elements, starting with the ambient house drift of time travel, which soon settles into a classic rare synth pop as 2souls, 1heart, while let them know they won blasts more into the spacy and light dancefloor. sarignia s lovely gospel version of talk about a child, ends the album on a spare, but no less grooving, note. quality house music not only for adults.

following on from last years exceptional ‘obsession ep’ from art crime is a budding young talent by the name of will lister. originally from lyme regis, will moved up to london to attend goldsmiths university and in his spare time he helps us out behind the counter here at the shop. when he’s not here at the shop you can also hear him playing records on his balamii radio show or his monthly club night, ‘the aten’. ‘the phantom ep’ is his production debut and we’re extremely happy to be putting it out on our main imprint. the title track opens up the ep with heavily reverbed pads, echoed claps, crunchy percussion and repetitive synth stabs that all work together to create spaced-out atmosphere that’s full of twist and turns. flipping over to the b-side, ‘after the light’ picks up the pace with a driving high-hat rhythm and full-bodied kicks that underpin warm piano keys and smooth synth lines. ‘agency’ closes proceedings by turning up the intensity to full with a masterclass in building tension.

the first release from iridite in 8 years sees them returning to their roots with a multi artist release of glasgow house and techno at its finest. the fourth release on iridite from simplon does not disappoint deeply unusual but emotionally charged techno, it twists and turns throughout and bears repeated listening to fully understand it’s depths. for fans of shake, terrance dixon, model 500 and futuristic sounds. fresh from his two releases on the nuclear family, laurence hughes revives his elijah moniker for the most dancefloor friendly track on the ep. label boss jason brunton heads up the rear with january, a deep slice of spaced out four/four action with a sting in the tail.

the second tape on legowelt s nightwind records cassette series. through his remote viewing powers danny wolfers channeled the music of saab knutson of faroe islands circa 1993. 60 minutes of nordic ambient with a disturbing undertone of dark melancholia with vague notions of distant happiness. saab knutson is a man with many issues, but on the faroe islands there is no time for issues. to stay of sound mind, saab plays his synthesizers in the few spare hours he manages to find, unmistakenly influenced by faroe s spellbinding landscapes and grim climate. though danny has never been to the islands he has a definite puzzling calling to them, a luring force, so to speak. hopefully he will sell enough saab knutson albums so he can fund an expedition and find out more about this mysterious destiny... played on yamaha dx100, roland jx3p, alpha juno 2, emu 16 bit digital sampling keyboard. ruby metallic cassette tape in luxurious faux plastic case

first in a series of edits from a well known brighton based record label. their resident producers and label mates breath new life into unknown rarities. vinyl only, as somethings in life, be it food, sex or music are better when they remain physical.

with growing support from technos finest selectors, this uk label is fast becoming one-to-watch if sci-fi-laden machine music is your bag. dark arts 06 rolls out with ‘gallery’, a crafty slab of organ-burning techno. to follow, rugged detuned bass throbs throughout the raw but funky as hell stealth-houser ‘spare groove’. the aquatic electro of ‘opaline’ is a delicate, percussion-driven ride until the chest-caving bottom end hits.to finish, ‘atrium’ is a deadly, percussion packed minimal groove - heads down and eyes closed for this tense space jam. highly recommended!

up first is gigolo, a spare and weird house cut with sine waves and random claps, hunched drums and trippy synth lines. it s a unique track made in a unique way and will lead to plenty of freaky dance floor moments, for sure. co. art is a whacked out techno cut with slap-funk claps, blistering and blistered synth lines and a rugged bit of bass underlining it all. the track is cavernous and metallic, empty and distant as if it somehow survived a nuclear blast. on the flip, alzheimer is a slow and gurgling, swampy techno number with broken drums and crawling synths that sound like their batteries have run down. icy, watery melodies eventually rain down, but the track remains resolutely eerie. last of all, fabric is another decaying track with subtle, heavily filtered synths and drums all making for a minimal groove that is barely there.

early in 2014, copenhagens kenneth bager asked electronic wizard and remix entrepreneur ruf dug if he would make an album for his acclaimed balearic imprint music for dreams. that summer, ruf dug headed off to spend three months on the island of guadeloupe in the french caribbean. seizing the opportunity to live out his own compass point fantasy, he put together a portable studio that would fit into a suitcase - two half-rack synthesizers, a couple of effects units, his laptop and a 4-track cassette recorder. he set up the studio in the spare bedroom in a rented villa and spent the next 12 weeks watching the sun set and making the album. all tracks were written and recorded in guadeloupe, with nev cottee beaming in vocals and guitar parts for a couple of the tracks direct from the heart of mancunia, hooking into the powerful and long-standing musical relationship between manchester and that most famous of sunset islands ibiza

nights are coming and going and faces appear and vanish, great plans are made and rarely held up to. while that is the mode that keeps the machine running, from time to time something greater can evolve out this fast paced spare time profession. that is to say, it is a great pleasure to smooth the way for our dear friend * kleintierschaukel* and his * blue elephant*. a rare species whose origins are found in * motomia* (a1), that odd place where sticky clocks tick faster than time passes. still all confusion is lost in the calm whispering of * juliette*(a2), a harmony of strange confidence. despite all its apparent harmlessness, it needs the soothing voice of our all beloved le- onie to let its vast figure withdraw to the rivers and show the gentle nature of this * unterwassermann* (b1). back in his element all notches are smoothed out and movements unite in a rythmic flow. this is not a documentary, this is the blue elephant: * tv ende* (b2).

laid down with authority by l/f/d/m are four no nonsense cuts blasting fresh air into that perennially en vogue phenomenon known as acid house. after stunning eps for glasgows prestigious optimo trax and clandestine traxx, an equally crushing full-length for kompakts ecstatic imprint, and two brain melting eps for diagonal with factory floors dominic butler as bronze teeth, it is an honor to have his sounds grace cgi with a release that sees him playing right for the heart of the dance floor.

scotland-born parisian paradise 100 (a.k.a. dj africa, a.k.a. graham peel) has been percolating stripped-back, bouncy-castle house constructs onto the web for a few years but never locked them in wax until now. high time. following his minimalist dictum *more than three tracks on a song is just indulgence*, his debut eps four cuts share a sleek, spare design, jigsawing slinky bass, classic keys, lean drum programming and flashes of synth mirage into fluid, aerodynamic patterns. touches of melodic acid and crossover new wave color the mood an exotic, hedonistic hue (further evinced by titles like the loin king and french kissing in the house of love). his own vision of the project is appropriately fantastical: *the image in my mind is of tropical forests at night, torchlight, distant sounds of tribal ritual dance and ghosts.* regal music for pleasure domes.

dj sliink, springing from the jersey club scene, has built an impressive reputation for his contributions to north american dance music. so much so that vibe magazine included him on their list of 30 djs to watch. his angular, spare take on club music can be described as straight forward, as much as a punch in the face can be described as straight forward anyway

the seventh instalment in lo sheas series of 10 vinyl only releases on seaghdha. you know by now how this goes - precision club workouts, which ricochet between uk flavoured jams, to clean cut techno & stripped down house. vasquez leads the charge here, less about the legendary captain of the soundfactory, and more the soundtrack to a drug deal gone bad in downtown miami. like her flails around a bowel troubling low end and crisp snare double act, piling on the pressure with an unrelenting groove and some deftly applied distortion. elsewhere 365247 is in more familiar lo shea / seaghdha territory, with some expertly manipulated, atmospheric sampling laid over a spare, shuffle-happy herbertesque workout. finally flash gives us a glimpse into sleepless basement, inhabited by addled humanoids, playing glass bottles.

the parameters of musical possibility are vast on valgeir sigurdssons third lp, architecture of loss. the music flows from no notes at all to lyrical, folk-like melody, from spare, acoustic sound to dense digital intervention. originally composed for the same titled ballet by stephen petronio. architecture of loss is a powerful work in its own right in which valgeir works from a broad palette of absences.

the loin brothers are long john saliva and dj silvio, two dashing farmers raised on strobe lighting, fuzz guitars and pork spare ribs. this is their second original single and follows on from heavy helmet, the mock & toof remixed single that caught the attention of aeroplane, ewan pearson and ivan smagghe with ivan featuring it on his live at robert johnson mix compilation. on this outing the loins have pruned, mowed, fertilized and watered their way through the studio to create the garden of vargulf. the original takes off with a thumping bass guitar, orchestral string leads, the odd desert wolf howl and a real guitar soloà with a guitar no less.

one of rough trades island 50th anniversary selection - 50 crucial titles, specially selected by us to highlight the unique contribution this seminal label has made to british music since 1959. jones best post disco album recorded in nassau, bahamas, with a truly remarkable studio band, including the legendary reggae rhythm team of sly dunbar and robbie shakespeare, along with marianne faithful collaborator barry reynolds on guitar. the songs are generally arranged in an innovative, ahead of their time way (echoey yet spare, with lots of deep bass) that owes a bit to dub and in any case provides a perfect backdrop for jones queen of the undead vocals. highlights include the proto rap walkin in the rain, (by easybeats / ac/dc auteurs vanda and young) and a spooky cover of bill withers use me.

who the hell are bleep district i hear you ask? well for those of you who havent heard their awsome debut on replay records they are matt powell a founding dj of the legendary quadrant soundsystem and the inappropriately nicknamed matt rhythm who rumour has it spends his spare time pressing random buttons as one half of deep house anti-heroes rhythm plate. coming straight out of leftfield, bleep district have exploded onto the deep house scene like a musical gas leak. their quirky, chunky, dancefloor orientated beats causing serious damage on dancefloors and working mens clubs around the counrty. these two devout christians and still practising altar boys have decided to continue the religious theme of the bleep of faith ep on the highly respected winding road and titled their debut for ornate music… end days ep. revelations (rapture rub) kicks of the ep with a clearly deluded shaun ryderesque gentleman professing his faith over a big moody analogue bass and detroit style stabs on a track that would make the staunchest non believers begging for absolution! and on revelations (pillar of salt dub) they take things nice and deep for those more reflective moments in the evening.

incl boris brejcha remix, busy time of the year continues for the jesus loved you label as two artists join forces to put out the release no.012. the original song was produced by somewhat mysterious space explorers duo. not much is known about this guys, their music, however, seems to have a distinct oriental flavour. in the southwestern parts of europe , >kaffana< is a traditional type of barroom where male customers like to spend their spare time. the track is like a short movie, describing the life of such place. the highly percussive first segment seems to correspond to the busy evening hours with their lively music and dancing. the exotic oriental theme that follows leads you to the misty afterhours when everything becomes possible. and just like in a good movie, the last part is the most exiting, making you feel as if you were involved in a car chase..,

as well as being the first track on the album jim, another day is released as the second single. jim bursts out of the box with a gospel flavour on his lips, testifyin hand claps a plenty and even some ambient birdsong to let you know that summers on its way. lidells got talent to spare, and he obviously knows his soul forbears work intimately. the 12inch includes two energetic mixes of another day from rustie and matthew herbert.

a classic bit of space disco from the french scene of the 70s. four long tracks that are all pretty darn moogy, and pretty darn great! the work here would fit nicely with some of the best keyboard heavy club of the us scene at the time! not exactly like some of the work on p&p, or the grooves of el coco over at avi - but not that dissimilar either, and often put together with a spare, simple approach thats a welcome contrast from overblown disco of the time! most numbers build up from a funky bassline and beats - adding in the keyboards with great relish, and really letting them jam and get crazy over the top. theres certainly a bit of cosmic fusion going on here too
